Dragon Ball Z is the classic, and Dragon Ball Kai is a remastered version with better pacing and animation. Essentially the same story, though!

Nope, Dragon Ball Z is the original, while Dragon Ball Kai cut out filler episodes and improved the visuals. Both tell the same story.
