Nah, they just get a bit roughed up if you ignore those defense warnings. Keep those turrets spinning and you'll come back to find everything pretty much how you left it.

Nope, settlements in Fallout 4 don't get destroyed while you're off adventuring elsewhere. They can, however, get attacked by raiders, super mutants, and other unfriendly folks. If a settlement's defense rating isn't high enough to fend off the attackers, you might come back to find it damaged. But don't worry, it's nothing a little repair work can't fix!

Actually, your settlements can get attacked, but total destruction? That's not a thing. Just beef up your defenses and respond to help requests. You'll be fine.

LOL no, Fallout 4 isn't that cruel. But if you neglect your settlement defenses, be prepared for some damage control.
