Yep, PS5 and PS4 players can totally play GTA together thanks to backward compatibility. It's pretty cool because you don't have to upgrade to a PS5 just to keep playing with your friends if they move on to the new console. So, game on!

No, sorry, that's not how it works. You need the same console version to play together.

Can confirm! Was on PS4 and my buddy joined from his PS5. No issues, we wreaked havoc in Los Santos together. Just make sure you're playing the same GTA version.
