Can you choose to only deal lethal damage in MTG?
DistributingJoke路7 months agoYou absolutely have to assign lethal damage to blockers before hitting the player. But remember, some abilities like trample let you stomp over and hit the player too. So it's not solely about 'choosing' lethal damage; it's about how the game mechanics work around damage assignment.

In MTG, when you're dealing combat damage, you don't get to choose 'only lethal damage' per se. The deal is, if your creature is attacking and it's blocked, you have to assign at least enough damage to the blockers to 'destroy' them (equal to their toughness) before you can assign any leftover damage to the player or planeswalker you're attacking. There's a bit more nuance if you have trample or other abilities, but that's the gist!
Sorry, but no. You can't just 'choose' to only deal lethal. You gotta follow the rules for damage assignment. It's more than just picking numbers.
I think the whole 'lethal damage' thing gets overcomplicated. Just hit the blockers hard enough, then move to the player if you can. Done.
