From my experience, you can't trade Pokémon if you're not physically nearby. You need to be close by, like within the same park or street.
You need to be pretty close to your friend to trade in Pokémon GO. Think 'coffee shop close,' not 'cross-country close.'
Hot take: Pokémon GO should let you trade from far away, but as of now, it's a no-go. Gotta meet up for that trade!
