Yeah, you can connect a USB keyboard and mouse to use the PS3 for things like browsing the Internet or media playback. But for gaming, you'll absolutely need a controller.

Sure, you technically can use a PS3 without a controller, but it's pretty limited. You can navigate through some menus using a keyboard or even use media apps if you connect a compatible keyboard and mouse. Playing games, though? That's a no-go.
