Nope, not unless you wanna share your genius levels or download some impossible ones from your fellow gamers.
You don't need internet to play levels you've already downloaded or to build your own levels in Super Mario Maker. But you will need it to share your creations and download new ones.
Only for online features. Offline, you're all good to create and play!
I mostly play it offline. You can still build and play levels! You just miss out on the online community stuff.
