Does a commander die in MTG?

In MTG, when a commander would die, it doesn't actually go to the graveyard unless the commander's owner chooses to let it happen. Instead, it can be moved to the command zone, ready to be summoned again, albeit at a higher cost. So, nope, your commander doesn't have to die-die!
Technically, commanders can die, but why let them? Just send them back to the command zone and avoid giving your opponent the satisfaction.
