Actually, I've had a problem before where I lost a tiny bit of progress because I didn't manually back up. It's rare, but playing it safe and hitting that backup button every now and then doesn't hurt!
Big no-no to the worry, buddy! Geometry Dash is pretty solid when it comes to saving your progress. Just make sure your device doesn't decide to take a vacation (aka crash) at the wrong time.
Backing up is for the cautious. Never had an issue with losing data, even when I forget to back up. Just play and enjoy!
