Contrary to popular belief, not all PS3s play PS2 games. However, all PS3s can enjoy PS1 classics without an issue.

Yes, but it depends on the model of your PS3! Early models (like the 20GB and 60GB versions) had backward compatibility with PS2 games. All PS3 models can play PS1 games though!

I have the original 60GB PS3, and it plays both PS2 and PS1 games like a champ! Later models? Not so much for PS2.
