As someone who loves both history and anime, I can say Vinland Saga does a great job melding the two. Thorfinn and Askeladd are based on real people, though their story is dramatized.

Vinland Saga blends historical facts with fiction. While the backdrop and many characters are based on history, it's not a documentary. Enjoy the epic ride, but don't cite it in your history paper!
