You gotta log into your Spotify account, head over to 'Change Plan', and switch it to 'Spotify Free'. If you want to nuke the account completely, find the 'Account Overview' page and follow the steps.

Just downgrade to free. It's all you need.
To cancel your Spotify account, go to your account page, click 'Change Plan', then scroll to 'Spotify Free' and select it. If you're on Premium, it'll downgrade to Free; otherwise, you can close your account from the 'Account Overview' page.
I canceled mine last month. Just went to the account settings, hit 'Change Plan', and switched to the free version. Super easy!
