You just have to go to the main lobby, then use the Character Selection screen. I do it all the time and it works like a charm!
Go to the main lobby and find the Character Selection screen. Changing characters is as easy as making a wish to Shenron!
Press start/pause during gameplay, select 'Return to Conton City,' then go to the Character Selection area to choose a new character. Easy peasy!
Why bother changing characters? Just level up your main and go Super Saiyan!
