Just deactivate it. Trust me, you'll miss those cat videos.
I just did this last week. Go to the 'Your Facebook Information' section in Settings, select 'Deactivation and Deletion,' and follow the prompts to delete.
Settings > Your Facebook Info > Deactivation and Deletion. Make sure you download your data first if you want to keep it.
