How Can I Remove Facebook Messenger?
Here's a tip from my own experience: if you want to keep your Facebook account but ditch Messenger, just log out from the app first, then uninstall it so you can use Facebook without the chat interface bugging you.

To remove Facebook Messenger, just uninstall the app from your device like you would any other app. On Android, tap and hold the Messenger icon, then hit uninstall. On iOS, hold the icon until it shakes, then tap the 'X'. Poof, it's gone!
Just stop using it and mute the app. Problem solved.
