How come Ash's Pikachu forget Thunder?

I heard Ash wanted Pikachu to learn more accurate moves like Thunderbolt instead of the less reliable Thunder.
Pokémon can only remember 4 moves at a time, so Pikachu had to make space for new ones. It's just game mechanics, folks.
Maybe Pikachu just wanted a break from big thunderclaps and opted for something flashier!
