Simply put, Ed gives up his ability to use alchemy to save Al, and they both get a happy ending.

In the manga's epic finale, Ed trades his ability to perform alchemy to bring Al back. Then they both return home, content and ready to face a new future without relying on alchemy. Solid conclusion if you ask me!

Ed trades his alchemy for Alphonse's life. They go home and live their lives without the Philosopher's Stone!
