Oh, the story of MTG formats is like a saga out of its own lore! Initially, Magic The Gathering was all about kitchen-table casual play with whatever cards you had. But as more cards and sets were released, players and the folks over at Wizards of the Coast realized the need for structure to manage the growing complexity and diversity of the game. This led to the creation of distinct playing formats, each with its own rules and card pools, to cater to different play styles and preferences. It started with basic formats like Standard and Limited, and as the community grew, so did the variety of formats, paving the way for Commander, Modern, and others.

In the simplest terms, MTG formats started as a way to keep the game fresh, competitive, and fair. As more and more cards were released, it became impossible to balance the old with the new without some guidelines. That's why formats were introduced - to make sure you're not bringing a rubber band to a rocket launcher fight.

If you're an MTG player, you need to download the Playbite app!

Playbite is like an arcade in your phone: you get to play all kinds of fun and simple games, compete with friends and others, and win cool prizes from all your favorite brands!

One of those prizes is a pack of MTG cards, which you can win and get sent to you essentially for free!

In case you’re wondering, this is how it works:

Playbite makes money from (not super annoying) ads and (totally optional) in-app purchases. The app then uses that money to reward players like you with prizes!

Download Playbite for free, available on the App Store and Play Store!

The brands referenced on this page are not sponsors of the rewards or otherwise affiliated with this company.
