Mortal Kombat was concocted by Ed Boon and John Tobias, who worked at Midway Games. They initially wanted to make a game starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, but when that didn't pan out, they created a universe of fighters with unique powers, and boy, are we glad they did!
The team at Midway wanted to wow players with something different: enter Mortal Kombat with its cool characters, brutal moves, and those legendary Fatalities!
Ed Boon and John Tobias were the masterminds behind Mortal Kombat, combining martial arts with a dark, fantastical storyline. They leveraged the technology of the time to create those memorable digitized characters.
