For transition metals, it's trickier: they have different possible valence states because of their d electrons. Happy hunting!

Just look at the element's position in its group鈥攖he group number usually tells you the number of valence electrons.

Honestly, just count the electrons in the outermost shell. The group number in the periodic table usually gives it away.
