To dig in Animal Crossing, you first gotta get yourself a shovel. You can buy one from Nook's Cranny, or sometimes you get one from a resident or as a present. Once you have your shovel, just equip it, walk up to where you wanna dig, and press the 'A' button. Tada! Instant hole!
Pro tip: Make sure to equip your shovel first! I spent a whole afternoon trying to dig with a fishing rod. Spoiler: It doesn't work.
