I always go for the Rain Collector in the early game. It's quick to build and keeps my survivors happy.
Invest in upgrading your base with a Well. It's a bit more resource-heavy, but totally worth it for the long-term!
Just claim a water outpost! Those things are lifesavers and provide water directly to your base.
