You can turn off the sound in Words with Friends by going to Settings > Sounds, and toggling off 'Sound Effects' and 'Music.' Easy peasy!

Just mute your device before you start playing! That way, the game can't mess with your playlist.

I always just use the volume buttons on my phone to turn down the sound when I'm playing Words with Friends.
