How do replacement effects interact with costs in MTG?
TabulatingMadam路7 months agoIn Magic The Gathering, replacement effects change how events occur but don't directly interfere with costs. For example, if a spell or ability has a replacement effect that would modify what happens when you pay a cost (like if something makes a spell cost more or less), the replacement effect applies to how the cost is paid or what happens as a result, but it doesn't change the requirement to pay the cost. So, if you've got a card that says creatures entering the battlefield cause life to be gained, and you play a creature by paying its mana cost, you still pay the cost, but the replacement effect kicks in once the creature is on the battlefield.

Purely from experience, replacement effects can make you think you're getting a deal on costs, but they really just alter the outcome. Always read the card twice; MTG doesn鈥檛 do handouts!
Replacement effects don't let you cheat on costs in MTG. If you gotta pay, you still gotta pay. These effects might change what happens because of paying, but they won't save you mana or other required costs.
