Forget all the complicated steps. Just use the USB cable that came with the console, plug it in, press the PS button, and it's connected.
Seriously, it's super simple. Just use a USB cable, plug the controller into the PS4, and press the PS button. Done.
Bluetooth is an option too! Go to your console's settings, navigate to 'Devices,' then 'Bluetooth Devices,' and press the PS button and Share button together on the controller until the light bar begins to flash. Select your controller from the list and you're good to go!
