I've found that building a Kubrow is one of the most fun processes. You get an egg from Earth missions, incubate it, and watch it hatch! My first Kubrow was my favorite, loyal and fierce.
You can also get companions by purchasing them directly from the in-game market using Platinum. This includes robotic companions like Sentinels or biological ones like Kubrows and Kavats.
