Trade with other players or NPC merchants if they have structural components in stock. Sometimes, planets with more advanced civilizations will have better offers.
Structural? Just craft it, dude! Salvage whatever goodies you find in space, and get to work at the crafting stations. That's your ticket to a sturdy ship.
Personally, I've found mining asteroids and breaking down old ships to be goldmines for structural materials. Scrap everything you see!
