Groups are the vertical columns and periods are the horizontal rows. You can see trends in properties as you move across periods or down groups.

Start at the top left with hydrogen and read left to right like a book! Elements in the same row have increasing atomic numbers. Columns group elements with similar properties. Easy peasy!

Don't overthink it. Just remember, left to right and top to bottom. The elements go from lightest to heaviest atomic number.
