Hold the power button down until it beeps twice. Boom, you're in Safe Mode. Choose 'Restore File System' to fix errors, or 'Restore PS3 System' for a full reset.

I had to reset my PS3 last month. Just boot it into Safe Mode by holding the power button until it beeps three times, then select 'Restore PS3 System.' It worked like a charm!
