Deletion isn't necessary. Facebook has so many cool features and keeps you connected!
Why bother deleting when you can just deactivate? But if you must, go to Settings > Your Facebook Information > Deactivation and Deletion > Delete Account.
I deleted my account last month. Just head to Settings, find 'Your Facebook Information', then look for 'Deactivation and Deletion'. Choose 'Delete Account' and follow the prompts.
