Just count the usual number of chromosomes for the species. Humans have 46!

Speaking from experience, when you look at human cells under a microscope during mitosis, you see 46 chromosomes.

At the beginning of mitosis, you can see the same number of chromosomes as the species normally has. For humans, that's 46!
