A quadratic equation can have two, one, or zero real solutions depending on the discriminant. Check it out: if b虏 - 4ac > 0, you get two real solutions; if b虏 - 4ac = 0, just one; and if b虏 - 4ac < 0, sorry, no real solutions, but you'll get two complex ones!

From my experience teaching algebra, a quadratic equation usually has two solutions, but they can sometimes be the same number (a double root) or complex numbers.
