You gotta wait until the augment icon appears, then press the assigned button (usually the right D-pad on consoles or '7' on PC). Easy peasy!

The first time it took me a minute to figure out, but once the augment icon pops up, just hit the right arrow on the D-pad (consoles) or '7' on PC and select your boost. Game-changer!
