Just make the character bob up and down a pixel or two. Simple but effective.
From personal experience, I found making 3-4 frames for a simple rise and fall motion works wonders. Keep it subtle!
Why not try using a slight scale change on the torso sprite? A small up-and-down motion should do the trick.
