You can also use Bob-ombs to blow up the buried stones. Just carefully place them near the stones and let them do the work.
Quick tip: If you combo a P-switch with a Thwomp, you can clear out stones too. Just get creative with your level design!
Switch to a mode that gives you a power-up that can break stones. No power-up? Try using enemies or contraptions to clear them for you.
