Use the staircase strategy. If you're not into the whole risk thing and prefer playing it safe, just bring resources to craft staircases and skip levels until you hit your desired depth. It's expensive but hey, it keeps your loot safe.

First, stock up on lots of food and bombs! Food keeps your health and energy up, and bombs clear the rocks faster so you can find stairs or holes quicker. Second, craft or buy lots of staircases for those moments when you just can't find the next level down. Remember, speed is key, so start early in the day and use totems to warp back home so you don't pass out and lose your progress.

Bring the best sword you can get your hands on and plenty of Spicy Eel or Coffee to boost your speed. Luck plays a big part too, so try going on a day when the spirits are very happy, which increases the chances of finding ladders and holes.
