Practice, practice, practice! Get really good at your main character and learn as much as you can about the others. Competing in local tournaments can help too.
I started at home, practiced daily, and entered every local tourney I could find. You'll need to be committed and keep learning.
It's all about grinding those skills! Master every combo, special move, and learn from every match, win or lose.
