You can't really cancel a monster hunt in the game. You'll have to finish it or just leave it there.
In my experience, all you need to do is go to the missions tab, select the monster hunt, and then hit 'abandon'. Problem solved!
You can't actually cancel a monster hunt once it's accepted. Instead, you just ignore it and focus on other tasks. Out of sight, out of mind!
