Just pause the game, man. When you're in the Backyard Battleground, pressing Start (or ESC on PC) will bring up the menu. Hit the 'Change Character' option, and boom, pick whoever you feel like smashing zombies with.

FYI, you can’t change characters mid-match during online multiplayer modes. Gotta choose wisely before the battle starts or wait till the next one!
