Hot take: The default starting items are perfect as they are. They give you just enough to survive while keeping the challenge intact.
The starting items are fixed, but find an outpost ASAP to stock up on the good stuff. Don't forget to scavenge every nook and cranny!
Survivor tip: I always check nearby houses and cars for upgrades right after starting. Usually, you can get better gear pretty quickly!
