Fire arrows + running in circles around stone pillars = easy Elder defeat. Worked for me every time!
Build a tower to snipe him from above! His roots can't reach you and arrows can do the rest. Trust me, I've done it!
Honestly, you don't need to cheese him. Just fight with a friend; it makes everything easier and more fun!
