Honestly, I've always just wiped them down with a microfiber cloth. Unless you're doing off-road adventures on your desk, they shouldn't be that dirty.
Just pop 'em under running water and scrub with a toothbrush. Easy peasy. But, ya know, dry them well unless you want your Hot Wheels to start their own rust collection.
