Hit jump near trees, poles, or ladders - Mario will cling on and then it's just up or down on the stick.
In SM64, grabbing trees or poles while jumping lets Mario climb. So find 'em, jump at 'em!
To climb in Super Mario 64, just jump towards a tree or pole, and Mario will grab onto it automatically. Then, push the control stick up to ascend, and down to descend. Easy peasy!
