I had a heck of a time with this, but eventually, what worked was updating the controller drivers and relaunching the game. Voila, button-mashing bliss!

Use a third-party tool like DS4Windows or Xpadder if your controller isn't recognized. Remember, a good controller setup can turn you into a Sonic speed demon!
