Use a USB cable to connect the PS3 controller to your MacBook Air first, then unplug it and connect via Bluetooth. Works like a charm for me!
I found that using a third-party software like 'DS3 Tool' helps a lot in ensuring the PS3 controller works well with macOS.
Don't bother, just get a newer controller like the PS4 or PS5 one for better compatibility and features.
