You can't actually deactivate Messenger without deactivating Facebook first. But once Facebook's deactivated, Messenger stays alive and kicking.
Just deactivate your Facebook account through settings, but make sure to keep Messenger installed and logged in. It still works!
Deactivated my Facebook last month but kept chatting on Messenger with no problem. Just follow the deactivation steps and you're good!
