It's easy peasy! Just talk to the companion and choose the dialogue option to part ways. They'll head back to a home base or ship.
Simply go to the companion management menu where you can change or dismiss them. I once sent my buddy on a permanent vacation when I needed more space for cargo!
In Starfield, dismissing a companion is as simple as ending a conversation, even easier than breaking up IRL!
