I remember the first time I tried to dive and ended up flapping around like a confused duck! Just jump in the water and press the jump button to swim around.
In Spyro, you can't really dive like in some other games. Spyro can swim though, once you unlock the ability in Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage. It's as easy as moving the joystick after you jump into the water.
Just get to water and press X!
