If you want to play with friends, invite them to your squad by clicking their name in the friends list and selecting 'Invite.' Easy peasy!
In my experience, the public matchmaking in Warframe is pretty smooth. Just pick your mission and the game does the rest. You'll be fighting alongside other Tenno in no time!
