To do a special move, hit the special attack button (usually the B button) combined with a directional input. Up, neutral, down, and side all have different specials!
Special moves are activated with the B button and a direction. For instance, B + Up might make Mario throw a fireball, depending on the game version.
Just push the B button while pressing a direction on the control stick. Each direction has its own unique move. Easy peasy!
